An Act respecting a framework to strengthen Canada-Taiwan relations
Bill C-343 establishes a framework for Canada to strengthen its non-diplomatic relations with Taiwan, including trade, investment, education, and tourism, while maintaining Canada's One China policy in place since the 1970 Pierre Trudeau diplomatic recognition. The Canadian Trade Office in Taipei (the de facto embassy operating since 1986) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canada handle current relations. Sponsored by Conservative MP Michael Cooper (St. Albert-Edmonton), the bill responded to growing Taiwan Strait tensions following Nancy Pelosi's August 2022 Taipei visit. C-343 did not pass third reading before 44-1 ended.
