An Act to prohibit the export by air of horses for slaughter. Royal assent December 12, 2024 (S.C. 2024, c. 24-ish). Liberal private member's bill sponsored by Tim Louis (MP for Kitchener-Conestoga). Prohibits the export of live horses from Canada by aircraft for the purpose of slaughter. The vast majority of the trade, approximately 2,600 horses per year before the ban, went to Japan, where horsemeat is consumed as basashi. Long-standing campaign by animal-welfare organizations citing animal-suffering during the long air transport. Sponsored after a 2021 Liberal election platform commitment.
