An Act respecting a national framework on advertising for sports betting
Bill S-269 was a Senate Private Member's Bill respecting a national framework on advertising for sports betting. Brought after the 2021 federal Bill C-218 (Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act, S.C. 2021, c. 7, royal assent June 29, 2021, in force August 27, 2021) authorized single-event sports betting in Canada under provincial gaming regulators, triggering an advertising explosion (Statistics Canada estimated approximately $1.5 billion in sports-betting advertising spend annually by 2024). The bill called for federal-jurisdiction restrictions on sports-betting advertising during sports broadcasts, prohibitions on athlete endorsement, and minimum-age verification requirements. Companion to provincial frameworks in Ontario (AGCO 2024 advertising rules) and the EU 2024 Audiovisual Media Services Directive. Did not pass third reading.
