Ontario New Democratic Party
Nouveau Parti démocratique de l'Ontario
Ontario's social-democratic provincial party. Founded 1961 as the provincial wing of the federal NDP. Formed government once, under Bob Rae from 1990 to 1995 in surprise majority that introduced the Employment Equity Act, the Pay Equity Act expansion, and the controversial Rae Days social-contract austerity. Has been Official Opposition multiple times under Andrea Horwath, including 2018-2025 in opposition to the Ford PCs. Marit Stiles became leader on February 4, 2023 (uncontested) after Horwath's retirement. The Ontario NDP went into the 2025 election with 31 seats and held second place in the 124-seat Legislative Assembly behind the PCs. Stiles has positioned the party as the strongest provincial opponent of for-profit clinic expansion, in contrast to the Ford PC framework that allows OHIP-funded surgical contracts to private clinics.
