Lori Idlout is the federal Liberal MP for Nunavut (one of three territorial seats), originally elected in 2021 as a New Democrat and re-elected in 2025 before crossing the floor to the Liberals during the period of Liberal-recruitment campaigns from Carney's office (late 2025 to early 2026). One of the five floor crossers who together with the April 13, 2026 byelections delivered the Carney Liberal majority government. Inuk lawyer by training, fluent in Inuktitut; previously executive director of the Akausisarvik Mental Health Treatment Centre in Iqaluit. Her crossing reduced the federal NDP caucus from 7 seats to 6 in the House of Commons. Continues to serve as a voice for Nunavut on healthcare, housing, and Inuit-language rights under section 16 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
