Amarjeet Sohi

Amarjeet Sohi is the 36th Mayor of Edmonton (since October 26, 2021). Born in Punjab, India, and immigrated to Canada in 1981. Before becoming mayor he served as an Edmonton city councillor for Ward 12 (2007-2015) and federal Liberal MP for Edmonton-Mill Woods (2015-2019), holding the cabinet portfolios of Minister of Infrastructure and Communities (2015-2018) and Minister of Natural Resources (2018-2019) under Justin Trudeau. Defeated Mike Nickel in the October 2021 mayoral race. As Mayor he has overseen Edmonton's housing-density rezoning, the 2024 city budget's 6.6 percent tax increase, and the long-running negotiations on the Edmonton-area zone tax revenue sharing.
