Lawrence MacAulay represented Cardigan, Prince Edward Island as a Liberal Member of Parliament from 1988 until he retired ahead of the April 2025 general election, after eleven election wins and nearly 37 years as the longest-serving member of the House of Commons and Dean of the House. A former potato farmer, he served in cabinet under three Liberal prime ministers, holding the Labour and Solicitor General portfolios under Jean Chretien, then Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food (2015 to 2019) and Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence (2019 to 2023) under Justin Trudeau. He was succeeded in Cardigan by Kent MacDonald.
