Manitoba New Democratic Party
Nouveau Parti démocratique du Manitoba
Manitoba's social-democratic governing party. Founded in 1961 as the provincial wing of the federal NDP. Has formed government several times: Ed Schreyer (1969-1977), Howard Pawley (1981-1988), Gary Doer (1999-2009), Greg Selinger (2009-2016), and now Wab Kinew (since October 18, 2023). Kinew defeated PC Premier Heather Stefanson at the October 3, 2023 election to become the first First Nations Premier of any Canadian province, winning 34 seats out of 57. Before politics Kinew was an author, CBC broadcaster, and Vice-President of Indigenous Relations at the University of Winnipeg. His government's signature legislation has included the Public Health Care Protection Act (limiting private surgical contracting), the Affordable Utility Rates Act, the Northern Healthcare Access Act, and the Indigenous Healing and Wellness Act.

Cost of Living
The Manitoba NDP under Premier Wab Kinew (since October 18, 2023) suspended Manitoba's 14 cents per litre provincial fuel tax for six months from January through June 2024, froze Manitoba Hydro residential rates for one year, eliminated the small-business payroll tax for businesses with fewer than $2.5 million in payroll, and committed to expanded school-nutrition programs in every Manitoba public school. The 2024 budget extended the fuel-tax pause through to December 2024 before reinstating at a reduced rate.
